HP AND LOTUS ANNOUNCE AGREEMENT TO DEVELOP, MARKET AND SUPPORT CC:MAIL/HP
OPENMAIL INTEGRATION
PALO ALTO, Calif., July 1, 1993 -- Hewlett-Packard Company and Lotus(R)
Development Corp. today announced a cooperative development, marketing,
distribution and support agreement to integrate the Lotus cc:Mail client with
HP's enterprisewide HP OpenMail electronic messaging solution.
The agreement includes HP OpenMail support for multiple cc:Mail clients,
including cc:mail for Windows. The announcement was made at the European
Electronic Messaging Association '93 conference in Montreux, Switzerland.
The cc:Mail and HP OpenMail solution is designed to meet the needs
of customers with large global networks. Cooperative development efforts
have resulted in HP OpenMail's industry-leading support of the cc:mail
Mail Engine interface. Through Lotus' leading-edge Windows client, with
powerful mail-management tools such as rules and advanced searching,
users can gain access to HP's UNIX(R) standards-based messaging backbone.
The solution consists of the Mail-engine Driver enabling direct client access
through for Windows to HP OpenMail.
Information technology managers will not need to support gateways,
directory synchronization or dedicated PC-server post offices, thus lowering
their overall cost of ownership for messaging. HP OpenMail also will
support the Vendor-independent Messaging (VIM) standard to ensure
integration with VIM-enabled applications.
"By combining the benefits of HP OpenMail with cc:Mail, we can provide
users with a flexible enterprisewide messaging solution," said Glenn Osaka,
general manager of HP's Cooperative Computing Systems Division. "Users
will get cc:Mail's friendly interface on their client platform of choice
without compromising access to the power of HP's standards-based electronic
messaging solution.".
HP is meeting customers' needs for integration into multivendor,
client server computing environments by pursuing an open, standards-based
strategy. HP OpenMail, HP X.400 and HP X.500 form HP's electronic
messaging flagship products, which provide rich user and administrator
functionality.
With HP OpenMail's open architecture, the solution can interoperate
with a variety of systems, from PC LAN to minicomputers and mainframes.
HP OpenMail is licensed by a number of equipment manufacturers, including
Applix and Uniplex, two leading suppliers of open office software, and
Alcatel, one of Europe's largest telecommunications vendors.
HP OpenMail's support of VIM and other leading APIs provides customers
with a choice of electronic-mail clients and mail-enabled applications.
"We're pleased to offer the award-winning, feature-rich cc:Mail
for Windows on Hewlett-Packard's messaging server," said Larry Crume,
vice president of Lotus' Electronic Messaging and Mobile Computing Division.
"As organizations look for increased flexibility in implementing enterprise-
wide messaging, Lotus will provide solutions that meet their needs."
With more than 3 million users worldwide, award-winning features and
availability on all popular platforms, cc:Mail is an industry-leading
LAN-based e-mail system. cc:Mail runs on all major LANs, providing
transparent connectivity to major private and public electronic-mail systems
and fax machines worldwide.
